Most road tires have tread patterns, which are mainly prepared to cope with the changes in weather and road conditions that may be encountered by road riding. The well-designed tread pattern can help drainage in rainy weather, and can also provide extra grip on sand and gravel roads.

The most important way to judge road tire wear is to look at the degree of wear of the tire tread. Many old cyclists use their feelings to judge whether the tread pattern is still there. In fact, in addition to the intuition trained by long-term practical experience, tire manufacturers also provide a more objective way to judge the degree of tread wear.

The part marked with the red circle in the picture above is called the tire tread indicator. The indicator designed by this manufacturer is mainly composed of two parts: 1 the indicator arrow of the sidewall; 2 the columnar protrusion in the tire tread. The indicator arrow can help you quickly locate the position of the columnar protrusions, and once the tire is worn to the limit, the tread pattern at the columnar protrusions will disappear first, forming a "broken pattern" phenomenon. Using the tread indicator is a good method, but it also has its limitations: it is too extreme. You really don't want the tire to be worn to the level of "broken lines" and then change the tire. The coin test rule taught by Alligator is much safer (born from the Penny trick in the United States):

1 Take a 1 dime coin.

2 The number 1 on the obverse of the coin is vertically inserted into the deeper part of the tire tread (next to the tread indicator), head down.

3 Under normal circumstances, you should not see the word "People" in the words "People's Bank of China" on the front of the coin.

4 Once the bottom of the word "people" is exposed, it means that the tread wear is reaching the limit, and new tires should be replaced.
